The governments of Guyana and Ghana have signed a cooperation agreement to materialize the ‘growing and strategic’ partnership between the two countries. Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in the Petroleum and Investment sectors were signed on December 7, 2021. This comes after a 3-day visit from the Vice President of Ghana to Georgetown, Guyana. This signing has come together after many months of engagements between the two countries. The countries have agreed to promote cooperation with the objective of developing resources while making efforts to ensure that all programs and projects are in accordance with policies made during the signing in each country. The cooperation includes the exchange of information through professional training and visits. The agreement is also valid for 5 years.

This is important for the countries of Guyana and Ghana because it will influence their partnership in a good way. Since it is in the Petroleum and Investment promotion sectors, it is safe to say that this will also grow their petroleum-related economy. The Petroleum Commission was said to use resources to support Guyana to develop national competencies in order to help it effectively manage its Petroleum Sector. It will also most likely establish partnership opportunities in the future. In my opinion, this is going to be a good push for both Guyana and Ghana in the economic direction.

This relates to class because it involves the economic relations between Ghana and Guyana. This will also increase their economic power. Economic power is one of the main types of power, and that is something we learned about. Another thing that could relate this to class is the idea of realism. One of the ideas of the realist theory is ’causes of state behavior’. This applies to the situation because the cause for this agreement is in pursuit of their self interest for their economy.
