To ramp up its efforts against Russia, NATO has landed a South American counterpart, Colombia. Colombia has been a part of NATO but this new agreement allows each other to access levels of security and to work together to tackle world issues. NATO usually focuses on its more serious partners within North America and Europe but is expanding to other continents like South America to gain military partners to deal with the ongoing Ukraine and Russia war. It is not a drastic change for NATO’s defense, however, Columbia is seen as a power on the rise in terms of military.

This move from NATO makes sense. They have identified a country that is willing to help, but also a country that has a military that is getting better by the day. It was a smart strategic move from NATO to select Columbia to help. Also expanding to South America broadens the territory that NATO covers leaving Russia to struggle to find partners if NATO continues to expand. It’ll be interesting to see if other South American countries try to follow Columbia and possibly work out a deal with NATO to almost provide a security blanket for them in uncertain times.

To me, at times NATO wants to become so powerful that the countries will second think about starting a war. Now, I believe for Russia this was a different case because Putin is not like the average leader of a country. I would look for NATO to continue to grow and almost create a trap for countries like Russia, China, and North Korea giving them no other options to work with but themselves. Obviously, that goal would take a while to achieve but it is good to see NATO expanding to South America and making deep relations to cover different locations around the world.
