On April 25th, United States state department officials held high level talks with Brazilian government officials for the first time since 2019. This will hopefully reinforce ties between the two largest democracies in the western hemisphere. Brazil’s president has not done anything to punish Russia for their invasion of Ukraine. Victoria Nuland who is the Secretary of State for Political Affairs expressed that in a time like this the United States and Brazil need each other. She also said that Russia was undermining the principles the United States and Brazil stand for. The United States wants Brazil to join the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
In my opinion this article is important because it is important for two democratic powerhouses to get along with each other. This should have a long lasting effect on the region of the Americas because with these countries working together they will show power and support to other democracies. These countries will also be able to somewhat “check” each other. For example the United States is concerned with Brazil’s deforestation of the rainforests in Brazil and plans to express their concerns directly to Brazil. I think that this happened because both Brazil and the United States see what has been happening with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and possibly want to work together to stop it.
All in all, this is related to what we have talked about in class because the United States and Brazil want to become closer and become better allies. This also is related to what we have talked about in class because it is in both countries’ national interest to work together and have better allied powers to try and put an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ultimately it is interesting that almost everything that is happening in the world right now somewhat connects to what is happening in Ukraine.
