Following Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine, global prices on wheat and other food products like cooking oil have drastically increased. Because of this, Russia recently donated 20,000 tonnes of wheat to Cuba, who has been a political ally since the late 1950’s. This donation was made to help reduce the food shortages that Cuba has been struggling with and to prevent them from needing to buy more food than previously which would damage their already weak economy. This wheat will be used to make bread in Cuba, which is the standard subsidized food in Cuba.

This article is important because it shows how the Russian invasion of Ukraine has greatly affected the global supply chain and economy, with many countries in the Middle East and Africa, as well as countries like Cuba beginning to have food shortages.

This article relates to class because Russia and Cuba have been political allies since the late 1950’s when Cuba had their revolution. It also shows how an event taking place an a few countries can directly impact the rest of the world through the effects that it has to the world economy.
