The most recent riot in a string of Ecuadorian prison riots has left 43 dead and 108 prison inmates at large. These recent outbreaks of prison violence are reportedly due to rival gangs fighting in prison which cost the lives of 316 inmates last year alone. In addition to this, the Inter American Commission on Human Rights has said that the conditions in Ecuadorian prisons are very poor and are as high as 15% over the maximum capacity.

This article is important because it helps to put light on a lesser known human rights issue that is happening very close to the US but has still not gotten much attention.

This article relates to class because the Inter American Commission on Human Rights is part of the Organization of American States which is an IGO that serves to promote cooperation between states in North and South America.
