Canada and India are enmeshed in an unprecedented diplomatic row. Here’s how it happened

Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was an outspoken leader of the Khalistan movement was murdered by masked men in Canada. The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed he has credible information linking India to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Because of these allegations from Canada India was outraged. They called these allegations “absurd and motivated”. Following this India and Canada expelled senior diplomats quickly. And on thursday India temporarily suspended Canadian visa service and called them “potential security threats.” The Khalistan movement is illegal in India and claimed to be a national security threat with his name also appearing on India’s UAPA wanted list.

This situation is very important because it has weakened ties between Canada and India for however long. The relationship between the two countries have been low for several years now and this could be a major changing point between the countries. I believe that it is not crazy for Candana to think the murders could have been orchestrated by India because dont like the Khalistan movement which is a separatist movement trying to create a homeland for Sikhs with their own sovereignty within India’s territory. Because of this their negotiations for a trade deal has been paused due to the problems between these countries.

This issue relates to international relations because of the fact that it is a conflict between 2 countries. Because of the conflict India has suspended the visas of Canadian citizens, which is now a part of India’s policy. This story has also become a global issue with many other countries speaking on it with most trying to stay somewhat neutral to stay on good relations with India and Canada. With the White House saying they are “deeply considered” with allegations and saying that “Canada’s investigations proceed and the perpetrators be brought to justice.” to play both sides in a way.
