The decades-long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is rooted in competing claims to the Holy Land and includes disputes over borders, Jerusalem, security, and Palestinian refugees. The United States has long sought a solution to the conflict that results in two states but hasn’t moved to restart negotiations. The US interests in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute and the Middle East in general include securing vital energy resources, staving off Soviet and Iranian influence, and countering terrorism, promoting democracy. But recently the US influence in the Middle East and Israel-Palestine have decreased over the years. Despite this Joe Biden and the United States sent one of the largest aircraft carriers in the world and an accompanying strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean, bringing its military support to the tense region. The reasoning behind the military move lies in discouraging Hezbollah and Iran from “taking advantage” of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Opinion: The United States’ main goal should be to promote peace and security for everyone, Israelis and Palestinians. And before making any rash decisions on the US part, those in power must obtain a sense of humanity for all innocent and suffering people. Israelis and Palestinians. That they are free from oppression, occupation, and terrorism. Nevertheless, the strategic military move to send a US carrier strike group was a necessary decision as a strong signal of deterrence against Hezbollah, a group involved in numerous anti-US terrorist attacks. Hezebloh poses a threat just to Israeli citizens. The group fired guided rockets and artillery at an Israeli-occupied area along Lebanon’s southern border. Hezbollah’s entrance into the war would destabilize Israel and its allies.

The US influence inside the war connects to what we have learned in class because it is a pivotal question as Americans we must ask ourselves and our government, should the United States serve as the global protector, or lie back and focus domestically? We have been taught that in most circumstances when the United States does get involved internationally it’s assault when it’s in the best interests of the United States. For example, in class, we discussed Why the United States didn’t get involved in the Rwandan Genocide because there was no real economic or military reason. We saw in Somalia when we sent troops for humanitarian reasons, and eighteen dead soldiers came out of the conflict. In terms of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, one could identify why the US might get involved whether that’s because of alliances or combatting other countries’ influence. The question is if the situation escalated will The United States put its own citizens/troops on the line to aid in the conflict?
