Concerns over human rights practices are rising in El Salvador after the reelection of Nayib Bukele. In a landslide victory, Bukele won the popular vote by over 80%. His massive amounts of popularity within the nation stems from the repression of gang violence that was reduced at a significant rate during his previous term. Although this feat came with some controversial policies. Bukele is the self proclaimed ‘world’s coolest dictator.’ During a large stint of arrests made by the hand of Bukele 75,000 individuals were detained with connection to gang violence. Amnesty International made a report stating the possibility of these being arbitrary arrests was likely high. Questions have been raised as to whether or not his methods of undermining organized crime in the state are sustainable. Therefore there is a layer of complexity to his presidency. We can’t say for certain that there are plans made by Bukele to look toward a more sustainable future, although it may not matter to the Salvadoran people. They seem to be pleased with the work that Bukele has done to make the streets a safer and more protected place. At the same time this comes with the waning disapproval of the international community because it is said that the line is being blurred between security and freedoms of the people.

There is a delicate balance between freedom and security and it is yet to be seen if Bukele can make that distinction. Unfortunately having high amounts of gang members means there is a higher likelihood of widespread substance abuse and violence across the nation. It is critical to evaluate the next few years and see the road that Bukele decides to take in this fight against the opposition. It is yet to be seen if Bukele can maintain his stance of popularity among the people and gain the respect of foreigners alike. Fortunately his reelection is a sign that the people see a bright future in his ability to eradicate gang violence, it should be stated that it should be done through conventional means that promote choice and freedom. This situation could be the stepping stone to a better safer future for Salvadorans but many people throughout Central America, a step for one is a step for all.

Politically El Salvador is not known for being highly stable. Nayib Bukele has been able to sway public opinion in his favor and is cause for some unprecedented unity in the sovereign state. As a person Bukele is possibly insecure and self conscious. Stories have surfaced that Bukele has paid large amounts of people to create fake pro-Bukele accounts on Twitter. Mainly to promote him politically and socially. This could possibly lead people into a false sense of security as well has highlighting Bukele lack of confidence in his ability. He will be looking to show people that he’s capable, that could potentially be a dangerous path to go down. With feelings and emotions high that leaves him susceptible to lashing out and making bad uncalculated decisions. On a single level of analysis there is cause for concern that Bukele may not be the most stable person to be in office.
