U.S. sends more Marines to Haiti to protect Embassy

The US state department has sent a group of elite marines to the embassy in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. This comes because of the resignation of the prime minister of Haiti, who has resigned in order to allow for a new system of government, which will be implemented by the United States. Gangs control 80% of port-au-prince, which is where the US embassy is located. The United States embassy has riots outside, things being thrown over the fences and gates, as well as an overwhelming population comprising of citizens and gang members protesting the corruption in the Haitian government.

The United States sending troops into Haiti with the mission of protecting United States buildings and facilities shows how unstable the capital is. The United States generally does not deploy troops overseas unless absolutely necessary, as shown by the Ukraine war. Other countries around the world could have 2 reactions, to withdraw troops and let the United States handle it, or deploy troops of their own in support of the united states and Haiti. If other countries decide to support the united states it could turn the tides in Haiti and allow international involvement, which could either further destabilize the country by forcing a rebellion of independence from the citizens and gangs, or it could overpower the gangs, provide some stability and allow the government to get a hold on their own city.

In class we talk about how politics can play a part in war and it certainly does here. The United States deploying troops is a political statement to the rest of the world on how important stability in Haiti is and it urges other countries around the world to follow suit with troops, money, or resources of their own. Based on what we’ve talked about in class i think the situation in Haiti could be resolved by international involvement.
