There have been recent surveys from the AP-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research that show widespread dissatisfaction with both President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump. Economy and immigration are two areas that cause Biden to be criticized while many things like this bring criticisms against Trump. Over fifty percent of Americans believe that the cost of living and immigration have worsened under Biden, while forty-six percent also feel that voter rights, foreign relations, abortion laws as well as climate change have suffered under Trump’s administration. These sentiments reflect disillusioned electorates who are not happy to just choose between one evil and another. However, despite some few gains here and there regarding employment opportunities the general feeling leans towards disappointment rather than acceptance for either leader.

The poll results tells the story that both Joe Biden and Donald trump are both unpopular candidates for the presidential election. The publics does not want to elect either, while the respective political parties offer them up exclusively. This shows a disconnect and the large dissatisfaction which plagues the American public, this issue could become a major fault with the following elections. Many Americans already don’t vote as they see it as pointless, but now people aren’t going to vote just because they don’t believe in either of the candidates. This challenges the whole ideal of American democracy, the parties choose their candidates, then the select few who like them mass vote for what benefits them. This is an issue which probably has happened since the birth of democracy, abstaining voters are the primary issue with democracy. The voter pool becomes more selective the candidates become, only extremists vote, while more middle of the ground voters abstain due to the radicality of both candidates.

In international relations class we have talked about how the United States serves as the global hegemon. The issue with having a situation like this, is that the country can become very divided. A major issue is that if the country becomes divided, then the country can fall from the role as global hegemon. Who replaces the United States as global hegemon can have an enormous effect on what will happen in the world. If someone like China replaces the United States, then there could be a shift in the worlds view on many economic, philosophical, and social issues.
