Near the U.S. border, the Mexican National Guard fatally shot two Colombians and wounded four others during a confrontation. All of the victims, in a statement by the Colombian foreign ministry, were migrants who had been “caught in the crossfire.” It is unclear at the moment of the article being written if the migrants were migrants, but if they were migrants, it would mark the second time in just over a month that military forces in Mexico have opened fire on and killed migrants. Earlier in October, Soldiers opened fire on a truck, killing six migrants in the southern state of Chiapas. Mexico’s defense department said the three National Guard officers who opened fire had been taken off duty. There had been a large shift prior to this shooting, when former president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, gave the military an unprecedentedly wide role in public life and law enforcement, when he created the militarized guard and used combined military forces the country’s main law enforcement agency.

This increase in border crossing and altercations along the way is an issue in both Mexican national security, involving both the US and other latina and South American countries. This involves issues within Mexicans own political situation as well as many different political implications from a variety of other questions. A big contender in this current issue is the concern of drug cartels and its connection with human trafficking and the trafficking of migrants. As an attempts to secure their own border, Mexico has taken a steadfast approach to combat the increasing border crossing into Mexico that leads to the transferring of drug cartels and increased crime into the area. This is an ongoing continual problem with Mexico not being able to combat the influence of cartels and migrants that only add to the political instability that is present in Mexico. This poses a threat to both Mexico and the U.S., as they often are directly affected by the influx of crimes caused by these cartels.

The Solution that was established by the Mexican government was through dominance. The Solution via dominance establishes a power hierarchy in which those at the top control those below. This power solution is often done through violence. While there is a current issue with Mexico’s security involving politically instability and drug cartels connected to migrations trend, they have decided to use force and military power to combat this. Dominance being used in this way has not only led to over a dozen deaths of innocent and non innocent people, may lead to a larger problem between the United States and Mexico. If Mexico continues to not be able to control the crime and cartels within the country from influencing and reaching American borders, with the new Trump presidency there may be a greater political situation for Mexico. This security issue in Mexico often leads to a security issue in the United States because of the proximity and trade relationships.
