After four US soldiers went missing in Lithuania, the fourth one was finally found dead a week after the team disappeared. They were conducting military drills in an armored vehicle when they suddenly vanished near the city of Pabrade. The search effort has involved hundreds of people spanning four countries. The US Army is investigating what happened, but so far nothing conclusive has emerged. The statement released by Maj Gen Christopher Norrie did not specify where exactly the final body was found, only that they were working close to the border with Belarus. The incident has been regarded by many as an unfortunate tragedy as well as a mystery. The other three soldiers and the vehicle they were using were found in a peat bog this past Monday. Their identities have been withheld. The soldiers were all part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which is the US response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The question remaining is what happened to them. My theory is that somehow they lost control of their vehicle and it sank in a peat bog, unfortunately leaving them trapped. The fourth soldier may have left to find help but then tragically died on the way. There are many possibilities but ultimately that is the most likely option. What’s more, perhaps they felt threatened by an enemy presence, which would explain the closeness to the Belarus border.
All countries that helped with the rescue effort have responded accordingly. The list included Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland. Their armed forces assisted the US Army with getting the lodged vehicle out of the peat bog, and helped with finding the last body. It’s a universally acknowledged norm, save for a few countries, to help other states in need. This may include aid to help with natural disasters, giving weapons, or just monetary aid. While this aid is often only given to allies, hence why the Baltic states helped relieve the US search effort(all of them are a part of NATO).
