As presidents new plan to cut off foreign aid is finally starting to take effect, many countries are feeling the consequences. The Haitian people, in particular, have lot access to a plethora of things including seeds, loans, and medical care. This is due to the Trump administrations new dismantling of a U.S. foundation that helped the troubled Caribbean countries. This program worth nearly 10 million dollars, helped over 82,000 Haitian people. The director international programs at Church World Service, Joel Malebranche, spoke up about these cuts saying “Cutting these programs, especially in this way, is cruel.” Studies have shown that these cuts will lead to malnutrition and in turn even loss of lives. However the Trump administration’s dismantling of these programs has been halted as a US judge ruled against it. However the upheaval that already began has effected thousands of Haitians.
Is it the US’s duty to care for other parts of the world? A question we have been looking into a lot lately. When the US becomes overly involved in other parts of the world we are looked at as abusing our power, and therefore disliked by other countries. However when we try to keep to ourselves in matters like these we are also looked down upon. But has it gotten to a point where we need to shift to caring for ourselves and our own well being? President Trump seems to think so. But if we do pull out of most foreign obligations then how will the rest of the world look? We guarantee free trade, promote security to democracies, and aid countries not as fortunate as us. Without our countributions the world could be a much more crime ridden, unsecure, unhealthy place than it already is. The reason most say a unimodal world structure is the least volatile is for exactly that reason. We are able to support the rest of the world. However pulling out leaves rooms for new hegemons and therefore new security threats.
