This article deals with warnings given by Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani about the possibility of Russian Interference in the upcoming Italian general election. At a meeting of the EU foreign ministers’ in Wicklow, Ireland, Tajani stresses that the danger of foreign meddling is not just a problem for Italy but one that concerns the whole European Union. He made it clear that we can’t rule out Russia trying to mess with elections and influence voters in EU countries. He called the actions “reprehensible” which means completely unacceptable. because they attack the core of how democracies work. This just highlights the ongoing battle between Russia and EU over who gets to control European policies and keep elections fair.

This warning is actually an incredibly big deal because it shows how easily our democracies can be messed up by using online approaches and cyber attacks. Instead of looking at just Russian interference as a localized Italy problem, Tajani is saying this affects the entire EU. He is trying to get all these countries to team up and build a united front agianst outside threats. But this is nothing new it follows a familiar pattern or Russia trying to screw with western democracies using fake news etc. The main threat here is definitely the long term impact because it completely ruins public trust in elections and drives a massive wedge between people. At the end of the day it just proves that Eu countries need to stop working by themselves and start working together if they want to protect themselves.

To stop these risks everyone needs to work together. The Italian government needs to make its cyber security better and teach voters how to spot fake news. The European Union should share more intelligence between countries and punish anyone caught messing with elections. Social media companies have to do their part as well by hunting down and deleting fake news and fake accounts. Finally voters need to think twice about what they read online. By double- checking sources before sharing or believing a post, regular people can stop Foreign people from tricking them. Ultimately, protecting democracy isn’t the job of just one department or company it is a shared responsibility. If we leave our entire democratic process vulnerable to outside manipulation.

This situation is a perfect example of what international relations looks like in the real world today. At its core, it is about a modern state trying to protect its sovereignty. The problem that different global actors are running into this right now is the fact that you have an IGO like the EU trying to get everyone to work together, but they are fighting against sneaky non state actors who use digital tactics instead of traditional diplomacy by messing with how countries run things from the inside out, these outside forces are creating a massive global challenge that makes achieving peace and stopping violence incredibly difficult.
