This article kind of piggybacks off of the last video. This article talks about the Sudan Army ruling out the possibility of any kind of treaty. According to the article, neither side trusts the other side to stop and has not received communication from the other side. While there is still a small possibility of a cease-fire happening I think this is a really low possibility. While the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has continued to lose more land and help create havoc. The war broke out almost a year ago as the state tried to transition to a more civilian-led government. All of this fighting has caused the largest displacement of civilians in the world. Where many are faced with hunger or are forced to leave. And the one person they interviewed who tried to go back to his town that was in ruins just wanted to have Ramadan in the peace of their home. As of now, the capital is divided along the Nile with each side fighting to gain more leeway. Beyond this and the many who are being displaced, the RSF has captives that the Red Cross is asking for but are being repeatedly denied. And according to the UN, nearly half of Sudan’s population no longer have homes. I thought this article was very good and I liked that it gave me slightly more background on the context of the war. I feel it is interesting that the state is going to war over becoming ruled by civilians. I guess normally when I think of an uprising I think of the lower class aiming to get more rights. While in this case, it sounds like they got those rights in the process of the government trying to start enacting those rights the elites chose to fight back. The article just said more civilian and I am assuming that means more of a democracy which is interesting. As far as both sides are claiming not to stop while I am not surprised I find it disappointing that neither side could do something for the betterment of the entire country. And it also makes me wonder about those people fighting in the war. What will they do for Ramadan? Will they continue to uphold the rules? Again relating this back to class I just feel this is a perfect example of the lack of power the UN has as much as they discourage and try to give suggestions when it comes down to it they are subject to the will of other countries. It must be extremely frustrating in times of war to try to find something that two conflicting countries or in this case groups would agree on. I also think it shows how one country’s issues can easily overflow into another country causing many countries to feel the impact of a conflict despite not being directly involved.
