There are misplaced people in Bangladesh from Myanmar and India is has the largest border along Bangladesh. The United Nations have gotten together to discuss the issue and have declared that India has the highest stakes to resolve this issue considering they border both Bangladesh and Myanmar. The representative that discussed India’s position on the issue was named Tirumurti and he commended the Bangladesh government for hosting all the misplaced people from Myanmar in Bangladesh. However, he also voiced concern that the international community has not resolved this issue in an expeditious matter. He emphasized that it is necessary to address the challenges that the concerned stakeholders continue to face.
This article is important because it shows India’s stance on the issue and its conversations with the United Nations. I believe that India has been brought into the middle of an issue that it doesn’t want to be brought into but has no other choice. They voiced their opinion on it and it sounded like they wanted to stay neutral, however, that really just isn’t going to happen considering their location. They also want to have more help with the issue from the other nations but it sounds like they kind of expect India to resolve it on their own.
This relates to things we talk about in class regarding the topic of Intergovernmental Organizations. The United Nations is one of the most well knows IGOs around the world and is a big part of this story. This shows how some countries can have different ideas on how issues should be handled, and that can spark problems within their alliances. Although the alliance is supposed to come to a consensus on the issue, that doesn’t always happen. It also speaks on location coming into play when being part of an issue, and that is something the country just can’t control sometimes if they are in the middle of it.
