Rafael grossi head of the of international atomic agency says that Iran is not providing the United Nations with all the information it should “We don’t seem to be seeing eye-to-eye with Iran over their obligations to the IAEA,”. This comes after Iran boasted about their capacity for enriching uranium to 60% purity. The U.N. also seeks answers for why they were able to find trace amounts of uranium in three sites they were not told about. but Tehran has asked them to drop its investigation if they want to have discussions about reviving Iran’s nuclear arms deal with the U.N..
The reason this is important is due to the fact that weapon grade enrichment is 90% and when Iran was part of the iranian nuclear deal with the U.S. their enrichment never went over 3.67%. This drastic increase as the US withdrew from the contract and placed economic sanctions is not a great look. added to this issue the general unrest in iran due to protests and government suppression the nuclear arms agency has reason to be concerned especially with the discovery of traces of uranium at 3 undisclosed sites. And while one could say that maybe all of this is an overreaction, the fact that Iran specifically wants investigations into these sites dropped for it to enter a new nuclear arms deal discussion speaks volumes. I doubt we’ll reach a point where iran gives full disclosure of their nuclear abilities regardless of whatever idea we make because it’s not in any country to give full access of themselves to another as states enjoy sovereignty.
This relates to the topic of security. We talked about how offensive realists will always be insecure of their security no matter what and to increase their security means to increase their offensive power and Iran is a great example of that. They have had civil unrest images now and this protest is just a culmination of decades of protest and instead of reform or domestic security that doesn’t involve a car battery and noose they focus on nuclear arms and the hiding of it from international organizations they are literally part of and decided to be in. Iran will like offensive realists theory say try to become at least a regional hegemony while its inner power structure self destructs due to the fact that many of its people do not enjoy getting their skull bashed in over religious reasons.
