Pakistan extends deadline for Afghans awaiting third-country resettlement

The Pakistani government has just recently announced that undocumented Afghans awaiting paperwork to resettle into a third country will be allowed to stay in Pakistan for two more months. Over 450,00 Afghans have left since Pakistani authorities launched a deportation drive in October. Pakistan’s drive to expel over a million foreigners living in their country without paperwork. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) over 450,000 people have returned to bordering Afghanistan since the deportation campaign began. According to the Pakistani government, 90% of them did it “voluntarily”. Pakistan estimates that 1.7 million Afghan nationals have been living in Pakistan, with the majority of them arriving after the Soviet invasion of 1979. A major influx of between 600,000 and 800,000 people took place after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. Pakistani authorities have seen an increase in violence this year with more than600 attacks in the first 11 months of the deportation drive. Sarfraz Bugti, the Minister of Pakistan said that 14 out of 24 suicide attacks in the country were carried out by Afghan nationals. However, no evidence was provided.

This is very important because Pakistan’s government is dealing with an immigration crisis and they want to deport the undocumented Afghani national. However, I do not believe Pakistan is not doing this the right way because they are using threats and scare tactics to get them out of their country. They are also sending them to the dangerous country of Afghanistan. Afghanistan is under the control of the Taliban and they will not be able to provide the simple needs a government should. I believe Pakistan should reach out to other countries to house the immigrants or make it more accessible for undocumented Afghan nationals to get papers.

This relates to security policies and terrorist organizations because of Pakistan’s policies on undocumented citizens and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan policy as of right now is deporting undocumented Afghan nationals because of the evolving view of terrorist threats facing Pakistan. So they are doing this to protect their state. With the Taliban controlling Afghanistan it led to many people leaving the state. Because of the immigrants coming from there, it scares the Pakistan government and citizens. This whole situation started with the Taliban and it goes to show how a terrorist organization of one state can deeply affect another.
