Last time, I chose a article about Morocco rejoining the African Union. It has been 33 years since Morocco was in the AU and has now been granted a part in the Union. In the article this week I was able to find out why, despite the disputed Western Sahara, Morocco was allowed back in the AU. Though the debate had a lot of tension, the AU members decided that Morocco would join back in since it was the only country out. They wanted to give Morocco a chance to be back in the “family.” Though they have set some rules for them. Morocco believes the Western Sahara is their sovereign territory despite it already having a population inhabiting it. The AU let Morocco back only if it accepted that Western Sahara is also a member of the AU. With this said I still feel that it is great that Morocco was accepted since the countries can now all have equal say on issues that affect the Africa continent as a whole. Though despite being told to back off Western Sahara,  the issue on the claim for Western Sahara is still something that will most likely be up for debate again since Morocco does not want to let go of that territory. I don’t understand why Morocco won’t allow the Western Sahara to have its own independence. I understand their own country would benefit from the resources but still, you aren’t gaining anything from conflict and the area is still being disputed and it is only causing chaos and death. You might have a more peaceful way in finding a way to work with the independent area once you allow those in the area to get their independence. I feel more conflicts can be avoided if Western Shara is given a chance to be independent. Many areas have been brought to ruins due to the fighting over the area. Aleppo is an example of this. It is now in ruins from the conflict between Syrian regime and rebels. What if that were to happen in Western Sahara? Maybe, there would be less devastation and deaths if they were given independence. Especially since Morocco annexed them to begin with. They are not actually a part of Morocco. They were annexed by Morocco. Now the indigenous people are seeking freedom and I feel they should be granted this. Like I have stated before, its okay that Morocco was let back in but it should not think being let in the AU will give it some advantage over the decision of who claims Western Sahara.
