Out of my four articles this week, I found the one about Morocco withdrawing from a buffer zone in the Western Sahara very interested. Recently Morocco was let back into the African Union after 33 years of leaving it. With its rejoining, it was looking to get some advantage over the long disputed territory, the Western Sahara. That is why I find it very interesting that Morocco would withdraw from a part of the territory they have long fought over. The indigenous people of the Western Sahara, Polisario, have long been fighting for their independence. Since tensions have been high I feel it is a great progress to have a reduce military presence in the area. Despite no clear answer to the dispute yet, the removal of military will allow the people in the area as well as towns to not be hurt by the fighting whether it’d be through fatalities or economic losses. I understand that the Western Sahara will benefit both Morocco and Polisario though I feel that they should find a solution that does not involve fighting. I feel war does nothing but bring destruction and chaos. Even if one side wins the territory is already being affected by the war, and so are they people. No good comes from war only a desolate area, especially since people are already leaving the area due to constant violence. I feel since other African nations have accepted Western Sahara as an independent nation and have allowed it to be part of the African Union, then Morocco should come to terms with this as well and acknowledge their independent nation. I know there are resources that Morocco wants from the territory but there has to be a way where they can find a compromise for the independence of Western Sahara and a trade of the wanted resources for Morocco.
