The UN believes that an enormous amount of people are going to Sub-Saharan Africa for the economic factors and less for the religious ones. They used to go there to join extremist groups but due to COVID, the rates have drastically decreased. They have gone from 92% to 57%. Nearly 2,200 people were interviewed for the report in eight African countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria ,Somalia, and Sudan. More than 1,000 interviewees are former members of violent extremist groups, both voluntary and forced recruits, said the report.

This is a very positive thing for the region. Less people involved with extremist groups creates less violence in the region. According to the Independent, ¨At least 4,155 attacks across Africa were documented since in 2017, said the report. In these attacks, 18,417 deaths were recorded in the continent with Somalia accounting for the largest number of fatalities¨. This will go down significantly with less people working in the extremist groups. It could also reduce the conflicts between conflicts because they will be more stable and reliable to work with.

In class, we have discussed the term ¨extremist group¨, these are multiple people that are very into one thing. Typically they follow the same religion and become very very involved and can become violent to people that dont agree with them.
