Analysis Post: Malawi: People with albinism ‘living in fear’

Those who have the condition of albinism in Malawi are living in fear because criminals attack and kill them, hoping to sell their bones on the black market because they are believed to have magical powers.

As I read this article and another one that described first hand stories I felt sickened and still do. I can not comprehend why someone would do this and why not more is being done to stop it. One man named Massah who is albino said this: “We face a high risk of attack and we have seen government commitment in words, but not in action.”

It is horrible that these individuals have to live in fear, they do not feel safe going to school, work or anywhere because multiple people have even been attacked inside their own homes. What kind of life is it living in constant fear? Something needs to be done. The governemment needs to follow through on each individual case that has occurred.

This quote gives hope to some progress:”As a government, we are saying that we are committed, and asking people to come forward and assist us,” Dausi said. “If there is anybody who feels that the justice is not served, they should come forward,” he added. However these are just words and action needs to take place because a lack of action energizes attacks.
