Nigeria Declares National Disaster After Severe Floods Kill 100

Ben Keane

Over the last month, the people of Nigeria have seen mass flooding that has killed upward of 100 people and displaced thousands. While Nigeria sees flooding due to torrential rains yearly, this year it has been worsened because of climate change and poor town planning. The Niger River and the Benue River both overflowed and swept away a majority of the houses nearby.

This disaster leads one to ask the question of how the entire world poisoning the environment and causing climate change that leads to natural disasters worsening to the point of this one. Climate Change continues to be one of the most pressing issues facing the world right now and when it is a causes for thousands to be displaced or killed, it becomes more and more in need of a solution. While preventing global warming seems like it has become an unsolvable issue, most people agree on a few solutions for it. The first solution is obviously eliminating fossil fuels. This is the most difficult of the tasks as many nations economies rely on oil, coal, and other fossil fuels. Many nations also rely on fossil fuels for energy and are not in a place economically to convert to other methods. Another problem is that power grids across the world are at an overload but power demands continue to rise. Improved infrastructure on MDCs could help to improve this, so buildings will require less energy and be less environmentally demanding and harmful on the environment. Transportation is another prime cause for pollution and global warming around the world. The solution to this is as simple as car pulling and moving closer to work to avoid carbon emissions going into the air. Of course another solution is using less things that will be thrown away immediately after one use. Examples include plastic bags, plastic straws,a dn all kinds of other plastic items. If people can cut down on these, pollution would be less of an issue. Lastly, deforestation around the world is an issue that leads to massive amounts of carbon emissions going into the air, which is the prime cause of global warming. Climate change solutions need to be more prevalent in worldwide conversations because at the moment, it seems the damage done to the environment by MNCs and other environmentally demanding countries are harming countries that are less harmful on the environment.
