Recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo there is an election coming up in December. The ballot was just released, two big heavy weight opposition leaders were not on it. former warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba and regional baron Moise Katumbi. It gave other opposition figures like Felix Tshisekedi and Vital Kamerhe, as well as to Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, a hardline former interior minister backed by President Joseph Kabila. This was a problem for the opposition leaders against current President Kabila. Kabila has suspicion of having a corrupt ballot making sure he was the winner. Jean-Pierre Bemba words on him being excluded from this years election were negative towards the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). He called this election “ a parody of an election,” and went on to accuse Kabila of being manipulative and corrupt of pulling strings “to ensure that the government’s candidate does not have a serious challenger.”
Sub-Saharan Africa and the DRC have had history of having corrupt and unstable governments. A lot of there problems lead to unstable economies, although the DRC has a very wealthy income from gold, diamonds, copper, cobalt, uranium and oil only the top 1% has all of that wealth. This leads to instability in the lower class with a very large gap in between the wealth in the poor not having a middle class at all. The Government ties into this because the leaders are the wealthy class and they don’t create policies to help the lower class because they want to stay wealthy.
If the congo wants to seek improvement in there country they need to elect leaders that want to seek improvement as well not just leaders who want to be wealthy. If the congo also wants to improve its economy it’s going to need to seek other countries help, wanting to trade and improve infrastructure and stability.
