Millions Can’t Afford the Food in South Sudan

South Sudan is really feeling the effects of the war with Sudan. The newest Country has a very unstable economy due to the decrease in oil. Food is almost completely imported, due to lack of farms, and the trade wars is causing imported food to be too expensive for a citizen to afford it. “A third of the population is displaced, every second person is going hungry, and hundreds of thousands are at risk of starving to death” (Thompson, 2018). A man that is a teacher at The University of Juba makes an average of $40 a month, and pays roughly $10 a month for the Bus to work. Th instability of South Sudan is gonna be a major issue for the people. It doesn’t help that it’s one of the most dangerous places for people to go, so it’s really hard to find support. The food that people bring either gets stolen, wrecks in the rough terrain, or just disappears. This makes outside help extremely  difficult and unlikely.

I hope in the future first world countries step in and assist South Sudan. I think that eventually a dictator could step in and take absolute control and cause more problems. Some good ways to support South Sudan’s food shortage would be to air drop food or bring it in armored vehicles so it can reach it’s destination. “The United States alone, the biggest donor, has given $1.78 billion since the beginning of the conflict, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development, including $336 million this year.”(Thompson, 2018). We also need to introduce crops that can grow in there environment, that will create jobs and provide a domestic source of food. I personally think South Sudan is gonna be running into several more issues if they don’t improve there economic stability and don’t solely rely on oil for money. If half the population is starving they need to fix it.
