What we’ve learnt from the Nigerian election

With 73 million able to vote, this could have been Africa’s biggest-ever election – but only a third of the electorate showed up. President Muhammadu was just re-elected for his second for year term. It recorded the lowest turnout in an election since the establishment of democracy in Nigeria. The turnout rate has been gradually declining since 2003, due to the visible corruption within the government. It can be reasoned that if the government is bound to go against the people’s wishes and come out with a predetermined winner, why would they [the people] spend time to travel great distances to not easily accessible voting poll stations, when they could be making money they need in order for their families to survive, especially considering the high poverty rates in Nigeria.
