Analysis on “Algeria’s Ruler, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Agrees to Resign”

A corrupted government is thought to be one of the worst things in the world, and yet they exist everywhere. They’re based off of tradition and form so easily; the elite rise to power and bring their friends with them. This cycle just continues until enough of the general population stops to say something. Algeria is a prime example. Bouteflika is an 80 year old man in a wheelchair. Now I’m not saying that a president can’t be disabled but if that disability makes them incapable of communicating with the people, then that’s an issue. He has been in power for 20 years, which is a long time to get things done, but he hasn’t seen his people since 2013. His age is also an issue because how can a man be on the same page as the people two or three generations behind him?

It’s also not just about the president himself, but all the other officials he’s appointed and given power to. Even though Bouteflika is no longer in power, his party still remains in control. The people of Algeria are referring to these other officials as “the system”. They don’t just want reforms, they want a total 180. I have high hopes for Algeria now that the people are taking back control. There is no doubt that it will be a long and strenuous process, but now that it’s beginning the movement can push ahead.
