Recently in Tanzania, many school children have been walking back and forth to school, and have been victim to danger. The kids have to walk miles and miles home along busy roads, where unfortunately they are being struck down by motorist on the roads. In Tanzania’s main city Dar es Salaam, is where most of these accidents are happening. The roads there are in poor conditions with no signs, road bumps or sidewalks outside or around the school. SARSAI is a nonprofit organization in Africa that has decided to take on the task of protecting these children and installing the signs and sidewalks. They have put into a focus school and has reduced the accidents that have been occuring by 26%. Recently SARSAI just was granted $250,000 to expand their project to more schools around Dar es Salaam. This is a push in the right direction to modernize countries like tanzania to have infrastructure in place to make the community a safer and healthier environment. This is going to be a great improvement in the city. The article also mentioned, when cities typically industrialize, they forget about the children and their needs.  This is a great point because it’s very true, and they do need a lot of things. Green Spaces, playgrounds, and sidewalks are great ideas that industrializing countries should add into their development. The article also mentioned also that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death of 5 to 29 years old worldwide, and this was a new fact to me. In Nabias capital Windhoek, SARSAI, has persuaded the city to change their speed limits to be slower in school areas. This has been passed and a dramatic drop in deaths has already been seen. Also Ghana’s capital, Accra, has SARSAI has talked to the mayor there and now their making a plan to protect pedestrians.
