Tanzania has added streetlights which has helped women feel safer to walk home after work. Women used to not work as long as they do now simply because it was dark when they left their job, which meant they were more susceptible to be harassed or even raped. Most women were not even seen outside of their houses as soon as it got dark to avoid the dangers of rapists or men who would harass or rob them. These street lights are helping the economy and businesses because there are more customers after dark and women are able to work longer hours. These street lights are also solar powered so they soak up the energy from the sun during the day and used in the night to light the streets. The solar powered lights are expensive t install but after they are secured and working there is no electricity bill to power them. It is also very green to have solar powered lights because it does not use any fossil fuels and they work just as well as electric lights. This was one of the most interesting articles i have found this year because i had no idea women in Tanzania were so afraid to walk around at night in their hometowns. These street lights are such a simple solution that will help thousands of Tanzanian women and also the planet. More reforms should be taken in Tanzania to help these women feel safer but this is a good head start to make women’s lives easier. It also helps the economy a ton because stores are open longer and bring in more money from sales and taxes on the use of the building. More countries should take notice to the new street lights in Tanzania and bring solar powered street lights to more countries around the world because it will make the world a greener place.
