Solar Power Water Pumps – Analysis

As the effects of climate change are becoming more apparent, lesser developed countries are feeling the most impact. More developed countries have the infrastructure and ability to maintain order and continuing supplying goods necessary for survival if challenges present themselves. Unfortunately, lesser developed countries do not have the same ability to overcome challenges without support. Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya and Uganda, are experiencing irregular rainfall which is affecting their crops. This poses many problems since the population in Africa is quite large and not decreasing.

To help combat the effects of climate change, new technology with clean sources of energy are going on the market. Due to financial and government instability in the area, countries in Africa are still using diesel powered pumps rather than the new and substantially better solar powered pumps. Recently, the British company Futurepump has helped countries obtain and use the new pumps they created.

Not only are these solar power pumps, there are also devices embedded within the device to collect data. This will help the company monitor the levels of groundwater and inform the governments about regulations that need to be put in place prior to using up all the groundwater.

Ultimately, I believe that the more developed countries need to assist lesser developed countries with the development of infrastructure. Climate change is altering the weather patterns and lesser developed countries are not equipped to handle the natural disasters that are most likely coming. In order to avoid refugee crises and/or famine, a reliable source of food needs to be created. The current overuse of groundwater and oblivion to the remaining amount is setting up the Sub-Saharan Africa region for disaster and chaos. The British company that is implementing these new water pumps are helping make sure that a limited resource is not being abused.
