Africa: Why 2021 Must Be The Nutrition Year of Action in Africa

This year Africa will need to find some way to combat malnutrition in their country. Covid-19 and rapid global warming challenge the production and distribution of food to countries all around the world, but especially Africa. It is feared also that malnutrition may be pushed aside in the medical field due to the corona virus. Food chains are producing unhealthy, harmful foods such as processed meats and sugar sweetened drinks instead of healthy natural foods that would help combat the hunger based health issues facing many citizens. This because they are cheap and intensely marketed. From this countries are seeing the rate of obesity rise and they are seeing a double burden of malnutrition, where undernutrition coexists with chronic diet based diseases. Africa needs to build on the progress they had already achieved and make sure everyone has access to healthy affordable foods and good nutrition care.

It is important Africa gets a grasp on their citizens nutrition because it would help them grow and combat national challenges. Although it is a very hard issue to conquer, if africa were to fix the nutrition issue in their country, it would fuel their socio-economic growth in the future. If africa were to successfully do this, it would allow them to be seen as a stronger country that can sustain themself and their citizens, ultimately giving them more power and national impact.

Something talked about in class I feel I could relate this to is international interest. I believe in this scenario Africa is trying to increase it’s national interest by combating a issue their country has been known for and has been in their country for years. As I said in the paragraph above, if Africa were to successfully defeat this issue of health pertaining to lack of food or a good diet, the narrative they are seen by could change in the right direction and maybe even have a influence on other countries in the future.
