In southern Sudan, Hundreds of people have been killed or injured in violence that took place in the Darfur region, almost killing the hopes for long-lasting peace in an area that has been plagued by fighting and instability for decades. The recent violence began after an argument in which a man was stabbed to death, the prime minister’s office said. Armed militias then attacked the western city of El Geneina and besieged a camp for internally displaced people. By Sunday, 83 people had been killed and 160 others wounded.  The violence came in recent weeks after peacekeepers with the United Nations and the African Union started a phased withdrawal after 13 years in the region. Over 50,000 people were displaced from the camp and nearby villages and towns, the United Nations said. The fighting started in 2003 when, “Rebels rising up against political and economic marginalization of African ethnic minorities by Sudan’s Arab majority launched an insurgency against Mr. al-Bashir’s government.” The fighting led to the deaths of over 300,000 people, with 2.7 million others displaced from their homes.

The more I do research because of these regional reports, the more I realize how common the issues that happen in america, happen in other countries as well. For example, this is almost like the start of the BLM movement, that the killing of George Floyd was a big part of. A man in Sudan was also killed by armed forces which started the outbreak of fighting again. It’s sad that this country cannot keep the peace it seems to obtain every once in a while. Based on what i’ve read, it seems like the Government isn’t doing anything to try and help with it either. People are getting killed and severely injured but still will not sign the peace treaty, or at least stick to it, to try and ensure the safety of their people
