John Magufuli, the president of Tanzania, has recently been trying to urge the government to amend and remove laws stating that judgements should be written in english because they are “furthering colonial systems.” President Magufuli believes the language used for these judgements should be Kiswahili because it is Tanzania’s national language. The Head of State of Tanzania pointed out that english is not widely understood by Tanzanian people; therefore, it would much more convenient for everyone in the country if judgements were written in Kiswahili. There have been claims made that Kiswahili doesn’t have enough vocabulary to be of use; however, the language has been enhanced enough to be used in law, making these claims untrue.

Moving away from colonial laws implemented hundreds of years ago will be a major step forward for past colonial countries like Tanzania. I believe that developing and using their own individual cultural identities in government will help them to come out of the past. This simple change in the language of judgements will also help to unify the people of Tanzania because government decisions will now be more widely understood by the majority population. While the change does not seem to be fully implemented yet, it seems that there are a lot of people in support of the change and it will be enacted soon.

Places like Tanzania and other Sub-Saharan regions are the direct product of the early race for imperial hegemony, which was stage one of international geopolitics. This region is now mostly free from the colonial powers that had been in control of them and have developed into shatterbelt regions. The internalized and externalized conflicts that occur in the area are all due to the meddling of colonial powers during the developing of these regions, leaving them with minimal leadership and a wide range of different populations.
