Debate Rages Over Germany’s Genocide Deal With Namibian Govt

Namibia is fighting for reparations because of Germany’s past “colonial era atrocities.” Namibia gained independence from South Africa in 1990 after the NGO, SWAPO, advocated immediate Namibian independence from South Africa and became the country’s leading party following independence in 1990. Following the suspension of the parliament due to the devastating Covid-19 wave in June of 2021, Namibia finally was able to fight for reparations.

Germany is giving Namibia a comparable amount of 1.34 billion US dollars over a span of 30 years. The amount that Germany is giving while appropriate, won’t be enough to suppress true genocide that took place in 1904. 80,000 Namibians were starved, dehydrated, murdered, and forced to do labor because of their protests from Germany stealing their land. This was the first genocide of the 20th century and was one of the most brutal because of the sheer amount that were tortured just because of protests. While Germany was apologetic may never be able to atone for the pain and suffering of 80,000 Namibians.

This shows conflict between a NGO that was made into a new country that is trying to make a world power pay for the pain and suffering that they previously caused. SWAPO stands for South West African People’s Organization, they are an NGO and is a participatory, empowering, and charitable NGO. Since their independence in 1990, they have led the Namibians by majority vote and are in the process of reprimanding all of their past horrors.
