Germany provides support to vulnerable people in Lesotho

The United Nations manages their own “World Food Programme” which is a opportunity for the international community, particularly currently more affluent states to give aid to countries that are struggling in being able to amply produce enough food to feed the entire domestic population. This is such the case in Lesotho, particularly during the season in between planting and harvesting in the country in which food in rural areas is very scarce. Germany, a member of the UNWFP, has therefore contributed 1.5 million Euros for the years 2021-2023 to Lesotho in order to bridge the gap of hunger and non-nutritious diets there. Germany has, in recent years, been known for being very humanatarily benevolent, however often in cases in which it will not directly gain the support or appreciation from a state actor, such as during the Syrian refugee crisis. I feel as though this will certainly cause Lesotho to be more cognisant of standing with Germany as the German presence is already strongly noted in the region as Namibia was a former colony. I think from the perspective of Lesotho, as neighboring countries such as South Africa are not nearly as devastated every year by the effects of famine, many citizens will want further economic cooperation and trade with other countries to fuel sustainability, as their current domestic state is clearly not able to do. In regards to IR, I think this flies directly in the face of many realist points of view for the global community. The notions of realist theory, and the belief that all countries only work for their own self interest seems to be challenged here by humanitarian Germany, when pressed with the critical thought that Germany has very little to gain to their own side from this aid. Germany is not requiring a trade deal, military cooperation, cultural integration, or any treaties. They are, perhaps, true humanitarians, as seen with the fact that they did not require incentives after the fact in past countries they have recently helped, citing Syria again. I believe that realism and realist theory are generally true, and can act as a frame for understanding the world, however they are not full-proof, and Germany in regards to Lesotho is clearly an exception.
