On november 5, 2021 the United States of America became concerned over Chinese ideas of creating a military base in Kenya. The ideas for the planned base are because of China’s interests in it’s worldly competitors of power such as the United States. This will be China’s first overseas military base although Beijing calls it a logistics facility. The United States military planners say that China is expanding because it will limit America’s options if there was ever conflict. China has already had a foot in Africa with their one belt and road initiative that they have previously been working on and this is another step.
This is of great importance to the United States of America because there has already been a race for power between these two countries. In the world China has already been striving for more power. For example they are currently trying to extend their reach in the south china sea. Now they have planned for their first overseas base. The eyes are now on the United States to see how they react to China moving into Africa and not just staying in Asia. The possibility of the Chinese creating more military bases in Africa will be a new challenge to the United States and other global actors because it will make China’s military more of a power.
This relates back to our class because of how this affects the world polarity. The argument right now is that the United States is the lone superpower in the world with China and India on the rise. One of the main reasons that the United States is viewed as the lone superpower is because of their military power and their military reach. This is China’s way of being like the United States and having their military placed in other countries. This should make the threat of the world becoming a bi-polar system worse in the eyes of the United States.
