Many Kenyan workers are immigrating to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states to work as house helpers and other unskilled or low skill jobs. Many workers are being treated in very poor conditions that are akin to slavery. The wages that they are receiving are much less than the amount that they were promised. These workers are also getting mistreated and abused by their employers. Many of the workers also have their phones and passports seized which leaves them unable to communicate with the outside world. There are estimated to be about 95,000 Kenyans working in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia has one of the highest amounts of modern slavery. There is estimated to be about 61,000 people living in modern day slavery in Saudi Arabia. Kenya has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the world which leads to many Kenyans going to the Gulf states to find work. These jobs have promise of higher wages but many times do not deliver and leave the workers stranded. The Kenyan embassy in Saudi Arabia is not doing anything to help these people and are often accused of turning a blind eye to the issues happening.
The issues occurring in Saudi Arabia and in other Gulf states are clear violations of human rights. However, neither Saudi Arabia or Kenya are doing anything to resolve this. This means that for any effect to be made The United Nations or the United States must do something to end it. That may be through threat of sanctions or by buying oil from other countries until Saudi Arabia stops their practices of modern day slavery. This could also be done by threat of war from stronger nations until the issue is resolved. This may lead to resentment and may not be beneficial in the long run.
