Activist Nakabuye Challenges European Leaders Over Support for Crude Oil Pipeline Project

Summary: Ugandan climate activist Hilda Nakabuye delivered a speech at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue on Tuesday, challenging european lawmakers for their support of the Crude Oil Pipeline project. The EACOP has proposed a 1,400+ kilometer pipeline from Uganda to Tanzania that would be the longest heated crude oil pipeline in the world. Environmental activists are against this because of the high likelyhood of oil spills, and the effect on carbon emissions. The EACOP has been supported by European politicians and financed by European companies. Many companies have begun to pull out of the project.

Analysis: I believe this is a huge threat with the creation of over 34 million tons of carbon emissions. This is a step in the wrong direction as many countries have begun to step towards cutting fossil fuels and reducing emmisions. This would look negative for both the EACOP and the European investors of it. The oil spill risk is also very high making it possible for many Ugandans and Tanzanians to face threats to their living conditions.

How does this relate to Ir: Environmental agreements are a big part of countries policy, and the effects of climate change have brought on many challenges for countries especially where pollution has gotten bad. International agreements on the Environment can be complex but international cooperation has a large impact on the environment. The support from European actors has created outrage from European and African climate activists, who plan to make changes in environmental policy, and persuade European politicians to condemn this.
