South Africa condemns the killing of Aljazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

South Africa has condemned the killing of an Aljazeera journalist named Shireen Abu Akleh after she was shot in the head in Jenin after covering Israeli raids in the West Bank. The director of DIRCO claims this has happened in Afghanistan and Ukraine as well in a pattern and attempt to silence the free press. South Africa claims that all civilians and journalists must be protected in accordance with the rules from the Geneva Convention.

This killing of a journalist by an Israeli sniper has broken one of the major rules in the Geneva Convention, and therefore South Africa has condemned the killing because of its brutality and the added fact they do not support and recognize Israel. This has effects on the press and journalists, because this has happened more and more recently in different places in the world silencing free press in places that either don’t have free press or places that are in a state of conflict and don’t want people to know what is really happening there.

This relates to the topic of state recognition as well as free speech and the press in different countries. South Africa does not recognize Israel, and condemned the killing of an Aljazeera journalist in the West Bank, and in Israel and Palestine, there have been killings like this before silencing the press from reporting on the truths of the conflict between Israel in Palestine.
