Summary: The capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, finally lifted the 2 year ban placed on Miraa exports from Kenya to Somalia. Although Miraa is a large export, Mogadishu is also provided with goods such as soaps, tobacco, and coffee from Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. This move significantly impacted the Miraa farmers, as it opened up new opportunities for them to sell their product in the Somali markets. The ban was lifted in july of last year and since then exports of miraa have doubled. The lifting of the ban allowed the Miraa industry to thrive, keeping farmers from looking for other sources of income and being forced to “look for alternative markets for their produce.” This change has greatly contributed to economic success of Kenya and Somalia. Somalia is now Kenya’s 5th largest export location in Africa, beating Ethiopia which was previously above. Its a positive change for the Miraa farmers and allows for both countries to restore their trading system and relationship.

Analysis: Miraa, also known as Khat, is used for its stimulant properties allowing for a euphoric feeling. I think that due to Covid the ban of Miraa was a smart move. The city of Mogadishu banning the imports of Miraa allowed for more focus on public health and safety. A disruption in the trading pattern also allowed for less Covid to spread through the territories. Trading was limited therefore diseases coming in and out of both Kenya and Somalia were limited. Although it had a negative impact on the Miraa farmers and the economy of Somalia and Kenya, the well-being of the people was top priority and it eventually ended up working out and creating a much stronger trading relationship.

Connection to the class: The trading relationship between Kenya and Somalia is an essential part of how they interact with each other on a global scale. Its similar to a friendship where they engage with each other and encourage mutual growth and development. It allows for both countries to thrive economically and strengthens their economic ties to each other. Their friendship also strengthens their diplomatic relationship creating a foundation for support. In class we spoke about the impacts of Covid on trade and how it affected international ties, similar to how the trade shut down between Somalia and Kenya causing a disruption. But the resumption of the trade allows for the two countries to cooperate with each other.
