On Friday, the 19th of October, Chile and Brazil discussed a possible free trade agreement set in place by the end of the year. Chile is Brazil’s second largest trade partner in south america, Brazil is Chile’s largest latin american trade partner and had a trade worth of $8.5 million. The free trade agreement includes online retail, environment, labor and anti corruption measures. Cuba is trying to pay back all their debt from the past three years. Last year Cuba paid around $60 million and further $70 million was due by October 31. Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland have all renegotiated their debt bilaterally since 2015. The agreement included countervalue funds, money owed is discounted for local joint-development projects. The countervalue funds have an estimated combined value of around $750 million of the $2.6 billion owed. The only successful negotiation swap was by two of the biggest creditor countries, Spain and France. Cuba also defaulted on debt to private companies in 1986 and some of that still remains outstanding. Cuba attaches to the accord at a moment when it is short of cash due to the crisis in ally Venezuela. Brazil has the potential, if Bolsonaro is elected, of no longer having a democracy. The election will take place on October 28th and is between Leftist Workers Party, Haddad and Right Rival, Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro’s election is supposed to be a huge win against Haddad, and Bolsonaro has already started putting plans in place for when he is elected. He plans on easing gun control laws to allow them to arm themselves against rising crime, that could potentially happen before he takes office, if he defeats left-wing candidate Fernando Haddad. There is a need for security on farms and there are many robberies and land invasions. Bolsonaro is a former army captain and has said he won’t tolerate any crime or acts of terrorism, which is good news for farm owners. There are accusations being made about a possible funding for a mass message on a mobile application, “whats app” but Bolsonaro has denied the accusations made by Haddad.
