Cubans are hitting the polls – Analysis

Cuba plans to vote ‘yes’ to a socialist future for the generations to come. Cuban citizens are on their way to socialism that will update their constitution and stand as a vote for Cuban patriotism. A trigger to this vote came after US President Donald Trump claimed, “socialism is dying” and referred to Cuba as a “captive nation”. Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, claims this vote will be “a mobilization for peace and against imperial intervention in Latin America.” If passed, this new and improved constitution will protect private property, bring back the prime minister, and limit the cuban presidency to two consecutive five-year terms. The Government has assured that those who vote against the update or leave the ballot blank will be anonymous and face no retaliation. There have been little to no sign of anyone leaning towards a “no” vote, leaving Cubans and future generations an optimistic outcome. Many citizens are already exercising their influence such as a hunger strike to protest physical intimidation and arbitrary arrests by Cuban authorities.

I found this article extremely interesting and found the amount of citizens on the same page profound. It seems like all of Cuba wants the same change and fight against the communist government. This tremendous change will greatly improve the lives of the next generations to come and hopefully serve as a domino effect for other countries in the same situation. In addition, this article surprised me because of how controlling the Cuban government is. According to CNN, the state controls all TV, radio, and newspaper on the island. This step forward brings a lot of hope to Cubans and its future. Their most promising future starts with the majority voting yes and updating the constitution that has only led them to the negative conditions that they have been unfortunate enough to be living in.
