Since 2019 several countries in the Latin American region have been experiencing a multitude of protests and marches that have shaken national and international politics. These social protests have created a domino effect through Latin America, the significant part of these protests is the fact that many of them have achieved results; for example in Peru, after the government removed president Martín Vizcarra, the Peruvian people marched, and after two days of protests, the new president was forced to resign. Also in Ecuador, after the government announced that it wanted to eliminate the gasoline subsidy, the Ecuadorian people began to protest which lead to the government withdrawing from Decree 883.

This is a prime example of the effect citizens have on their government, throughout history we have seen the power people have when they come together and fight for what they believe in. I’m glad that this trend is moving through Latin America, because many of these poor countries are extremely corrupt and suffer the effects of their terrible governments. I hope these protests show the true power of democracy through Latin America and forces the governments to do some self reflection and realize how much can get done if the people have a say.

Using the levels of analysis, we can take a deeper look into the situation at hand. On an individual level, we look at specific policy makers and what they are doing to cause these protests, and example is the removal of president Martín Vizcarra. On the state level, we can analyze the countries in specific that this is happening, and by doing so we realize that most of these nations are LDC’s and have a lot of corruption controlling their governments. Finally on an international level, we can look at who these countries interact with or more importantly, who they don’t interact with.
