As climate change increasingly becomes a bigger and bigger issue, most countries around the world are implementing policies to reduce the impact of man on the environment. Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has created a proposal seeking to stop migration and climate change. The Mexican president proposed to US president Joe Biden, that perhaps planting trees throughout the Central American region will both create jobs and lower the unemployment rate, but also reduce the amount of carbon emissions that ultimately cause climate change.

This situation shines a positive light on the country of Mexico as it shows their presidents concern to reduce unemployment all while helping the environment, planting these trees will also help reverse the effects of deforestation which has become a serious problem in Central America. Hopefully this proposal is a wake up call for other countries in Central America and motivates their governments to take steps away from unemployment, and steps towards a healthy/sustainable environment. If more countries recognize the positive effects this proposal could have, many LDC’s in Central/South America will take significant steps towards industrialization.

Climate change also has a ton of influence on the economy and politics of countries, because if climate change begins to have a harmful impact on citizens to the point of them needing to migrate, their country of origin’s economy will take a massive hit as half of their revenue has left the country; businesses will begin to fail and before you know it these countries are LDC’s. But through geopolitics – the use of a countries geography to conduct foreign policy- these countries can not only curb the migration crisis, but boost their economies and reduce the effects of climate change on the environment. This is exactly what president Andrés is trying to do, knowing the power the US has, he has called upon president Biden to assist him with a plan that will bring economic and environmental advancement to Mexico and all of Central America.
