U.S. to process some visas in Cuba after 4-year hiatus

After the Trump administration pulled staff from the United States embassy in Havana the Biden administration announced on thursday they will increase staff again in efforts to resume visa processing for cuban citizens. Prior to this the Cuban government was taking shots at the Trump administration saying that they hurt Cuban ties for no reason. Soon after the Biden administration said that they would increase staff again. Although the Cuban government denies it, the Trump administration says they pulled staff due to the fact that multiple staff members in the United States embassy in Cuba kept becoming strangely ill. This was known as Havana syndrome.

In my opinion it was just that the Trump administration was pulling staff out of the embassy. I would do the same thing if there was a strange illness. With that being said I do not know if I would have pulled the staff for as long as he did and it is good that Biden is getting the appropriate staff back in the embassy. It is pretty sad that families have not been able to be with each other due to their visa not being approved. For example a thirty five year old Cuban doctor has been waiting to reunite with her kids and her father who are already in the United States.

This relates to what we have been talking about in class because the Trump administration had power to pull staff out of the Embassy building. It was in the United States national interest to keep their employees and citizens safe and not contract this illness. Now it is up to the Biden administration to bring back staff to the embassy building in the effort to not only approve more Cuban visas and reunite families but also make sure that Cuban and United States relations are not ruined because of this.
