A 36-year-old Daniel Noboa has won the presidency against a leftist lawyer who belongs to the South American country’s elite. Noboa is one of Ecuador’s last hopes. Ecuadorian voters have been left in fear of the recently increasing drug violence over the past three years. Ecuadorians see major issues like killings, kidnappings and robberies thinking, not if, but when they will fall victim to it. Noboa claims he will have some hard promises to keep “return peace to the country, to give education to the youth again, to be able to provide employment to the many people who are looking for it.” Noboa also states he will immediately begin to work to “rebuild a country that has been seriously hit by violence, corruption and hatred.” Noboa takes on a daunting task to reclaim Ecuador and set South America on the right track with the increasing violence aimed towards him and anti-corruption politicians like him. Earlier this year, the assassination of presidential candidate and anti-corruption crusader Fernando Villavicencio showed the government’s incompetence to clear out the security crisis in the region. Rosa Amaguaña, a 62-year-old fruit and vegetable vendor, said Sunday that safety “is the first thing that must be solved” by the next president.

Could this be a turning point for Ecuador and the region surrounding it? Daniel Noboa looks like he is the new hope for Ecuador. For years Ecuador has had problems with serious crime. Since 2016, Ecuador’s homicide rate skyrocketed by nearly 500% to around 22 murders per 100,000 people in 2022. Even amidst the extreme violence against politicians like presidential candidate and anti-corruption crusader Fernando Villavicencio, I believe Daniel Noboa will do some good work and put Ecuador back on track. Noboa has tough promises to keep but if the people of Ecuador believe in him, they will all have a hand in putting Ecuador back together.

With the swearing in of this new Ecuadorian president, Ecuador will see policies like providing employment, tax incentives for new businesses, and improvements on the justice system amid the growing violence. Furthermore, with the rise of organized crime in the region, this will be almost a science experiment to see if Noboa will be able to address it, because one of the main reasons he was elected was to address all the growing violence mainly coming from Albania, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela so if he doesn’t, there will be a lot of negative consequence when organized crime takes over another country yet again in Latin America. With the presence of poor national security growing due to all the destabilization in the country, this may very well lead to international security concerns with organized crime leaching into other countries.
