Guyana, Venezuela agree to not use force or escalate tensions in Esequibo dispute

Recently there have been tensions between Venezuela and Guyana over a piece of land located in Guyana but Venezuela is claiming it’s theirs. Venezuela really wants the land to the abundance of oil that is located on that land, prior to the agreement they had soldiers lined up across the border ready to go in. Guyana maintains that this is their land and their borders are not up for discussion but in a recent meeting between Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali they came to the conclusion that they “will not threaten or use force against one another in any circumstances” and “will refrain, whether by words or deeds, from escalating any conflict or disagreement”. The goals of these meetings was successful and I think Guyana still holds the upper hand in this battle because the land Venezuela is claiming theirs has never in history belonged to them.

This article still shows tensions flaring between these 2 countries it’s actually a step forward as just a week ago it looked as if these two countries might go to war. Now with the agreement of no military force it opens the door to possible solutions including diplomacy and land disputes. This article is very important for the future of venezuela even though its a claim that has no merit whatsoever Venezuela could really use that land. It’s clear that they only want the land for the oil but Guyana remains adamant that the land never belonged to them and they aren’t selling it. I think that the end of this argument could result in some serious tensions to come between all of these countries and we could also see some alter dispute especially if Venezuela gets the land.

We have been talking about geopolitics in class recently and this article further shows how Venezuela is only pushing for this land due to the oil underneath it. It also shows how countries are prepared to go to war over land disputes, that’s how important a role geopolitics plays.
