In Libya, Dozens of armed men raid the hotel in the capital, Tripoli, as divisions within the unity government surface. This took place in the Hotel Corinthia, which is at the center of the capital of Tripoli. Presidential council spokeswoman Najwa Wheba confirmed that armed men stormed “one of the headquarters where the council meets’ ‘. Another witness from the council stated, “no one was harmed”. This conflict comes from the pursuit from the UN of a security council meeting discussing the withdrawal of all foreign troops and mercenaries rekindles divisions within the unity government. “Incident underscores the continued risks to the unity government. Both the Presidency Council and Government of National Unity have faced both internal criticisms and challenges to their authority.

How exactly is this concerning? To have a gunman storm any hotel in any place is very concerning. I feel that the president Najwas Wheba is lacking in enforcing precautions to take place, and action to be done. Due to this very cause it shows weakness in security at important meetings, just like this one, possibly other terrorist groups might do the same. What I would do to prevent this in the future is to not hold such important events in places like hotels, but instead more secure areas. For example, it could be held at headquarters or heavily secured areas maybe in other countries if not possibly in Libya. Not only that, but there needs to be more security in Libya just in general, however it would be Whebas decision to make because after all he is the President, he just needs to show more initiative. I do also think that it was wrong of him to downplay the situation to the media because it is a serious event that took place and people that were at the hotel could have unfortunately got seriously injured.

This article relates to class by discussing the levels of analysis. At an individual level you have the group of the UN meeting with President Najwa’s Wheba of Libya to discuss a security matter. At a interstate level you have Libya where the event took place where a many men raided the hotel where the meeting was taken place.
