Ina visit to London and Paris to discuss Iran, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid stated that The United Kingdom and Israel will “work night and day” in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power. Lapid was on a two day trip to the powers a day before talks on Iran’s nuclear programme restart in Vienna. The Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, said earlier in the day that his country was very worried that world powers will remove sanctions on Iran. One of the Foreign Ministers goals is to make sure that banking sanctions stay in place against the Middle Eastern power, which severely hampers their economy. In addition, the foreign ministers said that Israel will officially become Britain’s “tier one” cyber-partner, in a bid to improve its cyber-defences as countries around the world face increased threats.

This is a possible fork in the road for the United States, as we now face the question of whether we should open up talks with Iran to stop the sanctions and work towards another nuclear deal, or follow in the footsteps of our allies, the UK and Israel, and work to stop them gaining access to nuclear weapons while keeping the sanctions on. This will continue to be a contested issue both in the region and globally, as major powers will probably pick sides on this issue. I don’t think that this is something that will blow over quickly and will certainly be a factor in our foreign policy in the near future.

This relates back to class as we have got to this point because of the shifting of our national interest due to our elections, leading to us providing an unclear message to Iran of whether we want to be part of this nuclear deal or not.
