The International Assistance Mission is now working with the United Nations after 18 of their colleagues were detained by the Taliban earlier this month. The IAM is an Afghan NGO that tries to help improve the lives and education of Afghan citizens. The members were detained because they were preaching about Christianity, and IAM says they have no information if those allegations are true. They stated that their staff members were taken from its Ghor office on two separate occasions. The Non-Profit has reached out to many organizations, including the UN, to gain more insight into the situation and to secure their colleagues back.

These types of situations are more and more common with the presence of the Taliban lead government. The new strict government is imposing restrictions and bans on NGOs that prevent them from operating in certain ways. The Taliban is scaring NGOs into following along with the government’s beliefs and goals. They are instilling fear into any organization that goes against the government. Organizations are not allowed to practice their own religion, support women’s rights, or any other mission that the Taliban does not agree with. Many organizations have caved in and have started supporting the government to gain some kind of security. Therefore, this harassment against organizations is causing most sectors of Afghanistan to fall in line and accept the Taliban leadership.

This situation relates to class because it deals with NGOs and the work they are doing during a time of crisis. NGOs are incredibly important to the global arena and the general well-being. They focus on a lot of humanitarian and political issues and their goal is to better the lives of people. More importantly, they are supposed to function without any government influence. These private organizations normally work towards their missions and goals. They support and work toward what they think is right. But if they are restricted by a government, that will have an impact on the global arena.
